INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Dec. 18, 2011) – Mensa Heat took control in midstretch and won Sunday’s $84,500 On Trust Handicap for California-breds and sireds on the final card of the Hollywood Park meeting.

He is by Unusual Heat, out of the Ole mare Chi Chi Nette, was bred by Madeline Auerbach and David Abrams, is owned by Peter Redekop and trained by Ted West.

“He had some very bad ulcers two months ago and you just don’t know how fast they’re going to heal,’’ said West. “His appetite is great and his coat looks great, but you always wonder if maybe they’re still there and not completely healed.

“He tipped his hand in the paddock today and his attitude was really good. We have a lot of options with him because he likes turf, dirt and synthetic.’’

Mensa Heat has nine wins in 41 starts, earnings of $418,758 and was coming off a seventh in the Oct. 29 Cal Cup Sprint.

“He just wasn’t himself in his last race,” said jockey Joe Talamo. “He was done at the five-eighths pole. Thankfully they found out what was wrong with him. They let me work him a couple of times, so I knew he was doing so well. He was so fresh today. I knew they were going along pretty good and he was just tugging me along. Congratulations to the connections. They claimed him for $25,000 and they’ve managed him so well. He’s so confident right now, it seems like he can do whatever he wants.”

Mensa Heat ran the 7 furlongs in 1:28.68 and won by 1 lengths at odds of 5-2. Legal Separation was second and Spud Spivens third in the field of seven.
