Unusual Suspect Picks Up Hollywood Turf Cup

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2010) –Unusual Suspect chose the right day to break through on Saturday by wearing down Temple City to score the first Grade 1 victory of his career in the $250,000 Hollywood Turf Cup.

Corey Nakatani got the 10-1 shot Unusual Suspect up at the wire under strong urging for trainer Barry Abrams, who owns the 6-year-old California-bred son of Unusual Heat with his wife Dyan and brother David.

Unusual Suspect, who ran second in the California Cup Classic over Hollywood's Cushion Track two weeks ago, registered his first victory since taking the Cougar II Handicap over Richard's Kid Aug. 5, 2009 at Del Mar.

A veteran of 55 starts and nine victories, Unusual Suspect went over the $1 million mark in career earnings ($1,035,171) with his first grade I triumph. He is the second Cal-bred to win the Turf Cup, joining Prince Spellbound.

Unusual Suspect completed the 1 1/2-mile trip in a solid time of 2:25.83.

Abrams said long distances are the calling card for Unusual Suspect.

That, along with the desire to find a home for Unusual Suspect as a stallion, has made Abrams look a long ways away for the horse’s future.

“Melbourne Cup next year,” said Abrams, who said Unusual Suspect would be sent to race next year in Australia. “He’s ready for two-mile races.
